Drawing from Hitachi Energy’s extensive experience, the REG650 Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) elevate generator protection to unprecedented levels of selectivity and sensitivity. The REG650 IEDs are designed to provide comprehensive protection and monitoring for generators, prime movers, and step-up transformers across various power stations, including hydro, pump-storage, gas, diesel, combined cycle, steam, nuclear, cogeneration, and renewable energy plants. Their exceptional performance, flexibility, and scalability make them ideal for both new and retrofit installations worldwide.
The REG650 generator protection system ensures maximum dependability and availability. Its internal/external fault discriminator leverages negative sequence quantities to facilitate rapid and selective operation. Unique main protection functions can selectively detect and clear all fault types over 100% of the stator winding. The stator earth-fault protection evaluates both fundamental and 3rd harmonic frequencies, enabling the creation of intelligent, application-specific functions that adapt to changing plant operating conditions.
REG650 offers optimal, ready-made solutions for small and medium-sized generators, featuring 20 analog inputs. This compact design integrates overcurrent protection for excitation or auxiliary transformers alongside generator protection. The 3rd harmonic-based 100% stator earth-fault protection employs the differential principle, ensuring high sensitivity and security, even during low load conditions.
The type-tested REG650 IED variants come equipped and configured with complete functionality and default parameters for easy product handling—from ordering and engineering to commissioning and reliable operation. Depending on the variant, either low-impedance generator differential protection or three-winding transformer differential protection is included, with other generator protection functions always available.
The 650 series IEDs introduce several user-friendly innovations, such as a significantly reduced number of parameter settings and enhanced HMI functionality, including 15 dynamic three-color indication LEDs per page (up to three pages) and five configurable push-button shortcuts for various actions. The most basic parameters are pre-set before delivery, requiring only application-specific settings.
