Benefits and Features Of GE/ Alstom P642

Micom P642 relay.

MiCOM is a comprehensive solution that can handle all of your electrical supply needs. It consists of a variety of ALSTOM Grid components, systems, and services. Flexibility lies at the heart of the MiCOM idea. MiCOM allows you to define an application solution and integrate it with your power supply control system using its comprehensive communication capabilities.

The MiCOM  Agile platform of transformer protection relays from GE serves to extend the life of transformers and provides quick protection against transformer defects. The platform includes three model versions (P642, P643, and P645) that encompass two and three-winding transformers (including auto-transformers) with up to five sets of 3-phase CT inputs, as well as high and low impedance restricted earth fault protection and integrated asset management.

In electrical power systems, transformers are high-capital investments. Although eliminating all electrical and mechanical stressors would be ideal for extending transformer life, it is impractical. Preventive maintenance can be scheduled using adaptive approaches to measure, alarm (or trip), and advise on cumulative service before an expensive failure occurs. Internal faults pose a threat to all transformers, with short-circuits releasing the most energy locally. The ability to rewind windings decreases as time passes and core damage may become irreversible.

Key benefits of Micom P642 relay:

  • Backup and logging of through faults are provided by the Micom P642 relay.
  • Transformer protection system has  simple setup – the wizard only takes nameplate data.
  • The Micom P642 is useful for integrated backup overcurrent per winding or CT input – optional directionalizing when using a 3-phase VT relay.
  • Ordering the 3-phase VT allows for complete power and energy monitoring and measurement.

GE MiCOM Agile P642  Key features

• Because of the transient bias technique, the Micom P642 relay provides high stability during external faults with heavy CT saturation.

• There is no slowing down of differential elements in the MiCOM p642 due to the 2nd harmonic component in fault currents.

• The GE/ Alstom P642 can adapt to transformers with significant CT mismatch between terminals – a matching factor of up to 20 can be achieved.

• Current transformer supervision works with or without voltage inputs, and it’s quick enough to avoid false tripping and alarms.

• GE/ Alstom relay has  NERC CIP cybersecurity

• It has ESI48-4 EB2 compliant Binary inputs

 • One of the main features of the MiCOM p642 is that it has harsh environment protection, which increases the product’s life.

• GE-branded models have no internal batteries, which eliminates a maintenance item and simplifies air-freight operations.

• Alstom relay supports all main digital control system protocols, making DCS, SCADA, and engineering workstation integration a breeze.
