Siemens Phase-shifting transformers
Description
SIEMENS PHASE-SHIFTING TRANSFORMERS
Siemens Phase-shifting transformers : Creating balance within and between networks
In power grids, phase-shifting transformers provide active power flow control. By enforcing or blocking loads, they not only improve the stability and flexibility of grids but also help grid operators get the most out of existing hardware. Ratings: ≤ 1.200 MVA ≤ 765 kV Features: Compact design; low noise; high phase-shift capability Options: Ester insulation; low noise, etc.
Areas of Application
The fast-transforming energy landscape of heterogeneous power grids presents operators with similarly fast emerging challenges. Their capability to ensure grid stability and reliability – and actively balance in shifting amounts of power from renewable energies – make these transformers a versatile must-have for competitive grids.
Increase transmission capacity
In an uncontrolled grid, the impedance of the lines will determine the natural load distribution. It is vulnerable to transmission bottlenecks, which in turn can cause individual lines to overload. By changing the phase angle between source and load, a phase shifter can control the load flow between parallel lines and network segments, effectively preventing overloads.
Improve grid stability
The rising number of interconnected networks creates more complex power flows – a trend that forces operators to consider expensive grid upgrades. Phase shifters have emerged as a versatile and more cost-efficient alternative: They block unwanted power flow from adjacent grids; they eliminate loop flows; and they are fast to reconnect after blackouts – even to grids with a large phase-angle difference.
Get power straight from the source
Distributed power generation creates new opportunities – energy-intensive sites can source power straight from near-by power plants. It’s a win-win: The energy user enjoys lower rates and a supply backup – the public grid. The energy producer secures a stable base load for their plant and – possibly – a higher sales price. What they need to make it work? A separate line controlled by a phase shifter.
Cross-network trading
Contracts rule cross-network trading between countries, power companies and grid operators. But actual power flow is not quite as easy to control. It is the result of many factors, from in-feed to grid characteristics. A gap between physical power flow and contract obligations can affect both profits and grid stability. More and more operators use phase shifter to actively close the gap – and keep it
